Past Simple

Today we're going to talk about the past simple in negative way, but first, we have to remind past simple structure in affirmative.

STRUCTURE IN AFFIRMATIVE FORM

When you write the sentence in this way, the verb in the sentence writes in its respective form according to its group: regular or irregular. And always accompany the subject in the sentence, like this:

  • Regular verbs

Subject + Verb (ED) + complement

We enjoyed in the cinema (Nosotros nos divertimos en el cine)

  • Irregular verbs (the verb change)

Subject + verb + complement

She bought a T-shirt (Ella compro una camiseta)

STRUCTURE IN NEGATIVE FORM

When a sentence is found in negative form, something happens: the main verb does not change.

Why does this happen? As a general rule, sentences that are formed in a negative way should carry the auxiliary do.

Since we are talking about the simple past, the auxiliary verb must go in the past, changing from do or does, to did.

The auxiliary did undergo the change in verb tense, indicating that the preceding action has occurred at some point in the past. Therefore, this action, represented in the main verb of the sentence, does not need to be conjugated in the past simple. Let's check an example:

Subject + Aux (did) + not + verb + complement

She did not buy a T-shirt (Ella no compró una camiseta)

STRUCTURE IN YES/NO QUESTIONS AND Wh- QUESIONS FORM

Now we have two forms to write questions in past let's see the correct structure for each one:

YES/NO QUESTIONS

Aux (did) + subject + verb + complement ?

Did he arrive on time? (El llegó a tiempo?)

Yes, he did

Did she clean the house?

No, she didn't

Wh- QUESIONS

Wh- + Aux (did) + subject + verb + complement ?
